Shopping Season is Upon Us: Black Friday Collection

November 27, 2020

In the 1950s and 60s, people started playing hooky after Thanksgiving — using their sick days to shop. You'd think this would mean warnings and demerits, but pretty soon, enough people started doing it, it became an official holiday.

Black Friday had a less-than-ideal origin story: Philadelphia city police used it to describe the chaos that ensued when shopping season officially started. Tourists and suburban shoppers would pour into the city, causing huge, unruly crowds and migraine-inducing traffic.

In the 80s, however, retailers flipped the language, making Black Friday the day when profits turned from "red to black." Today, Black Friday is something to celebrate for both businesses and avid consumers, with massive discounts and shopping sprees that last all weekend.
